Because you give, you will be blessed.
When you give, you don’t only honor God, you also open yourself up to the blessing of God. Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”God’s blessing follows our obedience to honor Him with the resources He has entrusted to us.
Malachi 3:10 “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!”
We don’t give because we have to give (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). We give because that’s what love demands of us. We all know that we should give, but most people just can’t bring themselves to do it. That’s because God’s chief competitor for your heart isn’t your ability to keep from sinning (Matthew 6:19-21). God’s chief competitor for your heart is your money, but your money can also be an avenue to open you up to God’s blessing (Acts 20:35). Generosity is not a money issue. It’s a heart issue.
Jesus told His followers to give their money sacrificially back to God until it hurt (Luke 21:1-4). Then He told them that if they do, He will bless them (Matthew 19:29-30). As followers of Christ, we return to the Lord 10% of what He has given us (I Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 8:12, Matthew 23:23). It belongs to Him anyway, and we believe He can do more with 90% of our money than we could ever dream of doing with 100% of it (James 1:17).
I believe with all my heart that when we honor God with our money, He blesses us. Sometimes He blesses financially. Sometimes He blesses us physically, mentally, relationally, emotionally, or some other way, but we know that God is faithful.
