Generosity is the Heartbeat of Discipleship
When we talk about generosity in the church, it is easy to assume the conversation is solely about budgets and finances. But as we explored in our recent panel discussion featuring Sam and Ingrid Harris, Cole Simonson, CJ Ward, and Seth and Jessa Curran, generosity is actually the linchpin issue in our discipleship. It touches every area of our lives, transforming our relationship with Jesus and teaching us what it truly means to surrender control.
The First Step: Moving from "I Deserve" to "God Gave"
For many of us, the initial barrier to generosity isn’t just about money; it is a battle against entitlement. We often catch ourselves thinking, “I worked hard, I deserve this time, I deserve to spend my money however I want.”
However, spiritual maturity begins with a fundamental mindset shift: moving away from an attitude of entitlement to the realization that everything we have is a gift from God. Whether it is volunteering time in the youth group when you are exhausted from work, or stepping out in faith to tithe when the bank account looks tight, the first step is learning to unhook our security from our own efforts and place it entirely in God’s hands.
Generosity Breeds Maturity
It is entirely possible to follow Jesus and still struggle to live generously. Our salvation does not rely on our performance, but we cannot grow into mature Christians if we hold everything with a clenched fist. Giving accelerates spiritual growth because it directly challenges our deep-seated need for control.
Money, resources, and time are deeply linked to our human sense of identity, security, and future. When we choose to give—whether it is a financial tithe, supporting a missionary, or giving of our time—we prove to ourselves that we are not the source of our own security. Generosity untangles our future from what we can earn and attaches it to the God who gives abundantly.
You Can't Hack God
It is tempting to treat generosity like a transaction—to view tithing as a puzzle code or a pyramid scheme where giving money automatically unlocks financial wealth. But God’s provision isn’t about getting rich; it is about receiving enough.
Life is full of unexpected trials, medical challenges, and seasons of scarcity. Yet, time and time again, testimonies from our community remind us that God is faithful right on time. He doesn’t always show up early, but He is never late. When we trust Him with the uncomfortable areas of our lives, we discover that obedience leads to the true freedom and peace that come from the character of our heavenly Father.

Generosity is not defined by a specific dollar amount; it is defined by sacrifice. As Jesus pointed out with the widow’s mite, true generosity flows from a heart of complete surrender. Whatever your next step looks like—whether you are setting up your first recurring gift, stepping up your giving, or taking a radical step of faith—the worst thing you can do is nothing. Run from zero, trust in God’s provision, and experience the life-changing power of a generous heart.
