Jesus. Week 11 Teaching

Is anger a sin? Not if it’s righteous anger. Not if you are angry about true injustice. But how much of our anger is actually righteous anger? How much is actually frustration with people who hurt us or people we disagree with?

Anger breaks relationships.

When you’re angry, ask yourself, “is this worth breaking a relationship?” If not, run from anger. If the news makes you mad, stop watching it. If you get angry when you drink alcohol, stop drinking. The apostle Paul said,

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.

Ephesians 4:26

Sinful anger happens when someone takes something from us, or hurts us. Sinful anger usually has a statement like, “I deserve,” “that’s not fair,” or “it’s my right.”

The root of sinful anger is self-focus.

Spiritual maturity reduces anger because it removes the focus from the self to God. As we mature spiritually, we set our eyes on things above, and when we do get angry, we get angry about the things God gets angry about.

Matthew 21:12-16

Jesus Clears the Temple

¹² Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. ¹³ He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!”

¹⁴ The blind and the lame came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. ¹⁵ The leading priests and the teachers of religious law saw these wonderful miracles and heard even the children in the Temple shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David.”

But the leaders were indignant. ¹⁶ They asked Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?”

“Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give you praise.’”
