You’ve probably heard of Jesus’ most famous disciple, Peter. If you grew up Catholic you know him as Saint Peter. And Peter was the most outspoken, the most courageous of Jesus’ disciples. He’s the one who pulled out a sword when Jesus was being arrested and chopped the ear of one of the cops. And when Jesus was arrested, he was brave enough to follow the SWAT team that took him to jail.
Through all that, Peter denied Jesus 3 times. After Jesus was resurrected he asked Peter…
After breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him. 16 Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.” “Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said. 17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.John 21:15-1715
Jesus is standing with you right now asking “do you love me?” Your response to him determines everything else. When you stand before God will you deny Him, or follow Him. It’s not about the things you’ve done right or done wrong. It’s about what He did right.
